It's hard to believe, but we are at the close of the 2020-2021 school year! It certainly has been a different adventure this year, and a lot of our information has moved to Seesaw. If you are looking for videos or activities from this year, please check there or send me an email at [email protected] and I will help as best I can. In the meantime, there are plenty of fun music games and activities here on this website that are available for anyone to check out, and plenty of activities here on the blog from times past as well. Enjoy and have a great summer!

We know that students have been working hard on their assignments while we have been away and we wanted to do something special for the month of May. Introducing...Falcon FLEX Friday!
Here's how it works: Complete your academic homeroom work Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. On Friday, pull out your FLEX Friday Bingo board and pick 5 activities to try! If you complete 5 in a row up, down, or sideways, you can send in your completed bingo card to win a PRIZE delivered to your home!! To enter the contest, email your completed board to [email protected]! You'll find a copy of the board below as well as a video explaining a bit more about how this all works. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to email me at [email protected]! For my 4th and 5th grade friends, hello! I have some videos for you today that I think will be a good start on our Conversational Solfege units. We have already done Unit 1 and 2 in 4th and 5th grades and we had started or worked our way mostly through Unit 3. Since we are all at home now, we will go back and review Unit 1 and work our way up through Unit 4. At each step, check your work for accuracy and if you're not sure whether you've got it, you can always send me a video of your progress here: https://forms.gle/6ugT1QWat2PKK9vC9 To start, here is a video explaining Du and Du-de! Now that you know why we use this system, how does it compare to a counting system your parents or someone else in your house used when they were learning to count rhythms? Which system do they prefer and why? Now that you've got that in your brain, here's a Mrs. Sarris video for Du and Du-de!
Second and third grade students have been working on units 1-4 of Conversational Solfege this year, in addition to our mallet instruments and folk dancing, which are both difficult to do by yourself at home! Conversational Solfege is a literacy curriculum that we use for about 10-15 minutes per class to work towards reading and writing music. The 12 steps of Music Literacy are outlined below. We usually cycle through a step or two per class, and I intend on making videos for each step to walk students through each step if you'd like to try your hand at learning how to read music yourself! It's easier than you think!! You'll notice that Step 1 is to simply sing song, chant rhymes, and play games. For Units 1-4, I have listed video links to use for Step 1 of each unit, 2 each. Check them out and enjoy!
Unit 1: Yankee Doodle Closet Key Pitter Patter Unit 2: Old Raggy Oh My Fish in the Sky Unit 3: Jack and Jill Humpty Dumpty - these versions have a tune but we typically chant the words to the chorus of each in class! (Sailor, Sailor) Unit 4: Sailor, Sailor - if you get the number correct, the words are: "You have guessed the number true, you have guessed the number true, you have guessed the number true, so you shall sail the ocean blue!" Closet Key Pitter Patter Frog in the Meadow What follows are links to all the things we do or would have soon done in our 4K, 5K, and 1st grade classes! For some students these will be review and they will be new for others. In a typical music class, we do a series of 8 different steps, so all activities are 5 minutes or less. You could do one each day, pick a few to do once a week, or use them as jumping off points for teaching songs and games you might remember from when you were little! Sharing songs, stories, fingerplays, and singing together is a great way to encourage the musical development of your child and a wonderful bonding activity for the entire family - the best part is no one will judge you if you sing out of tune! It's If you or your student remember a song or game from my music class or elsewhere and you're having trouble finding or remembering it, please reach out and let me know! I have a ton of videos that are not published online and I am happy to record myself singing/showing/demonstrating any song or game! Please email me at [email protected] if I can be any help or if you just want to share!
Jill Trinka on Youtube - This lovely collection houses most of the songs we sing in all 3 grades. 4K and 5K mostly use There's a Hole in the Bucket and Had a Little Rooster, while 1st grade uses Old Joe Clark and There's a Hole in the Bucket. You can also search for "Jill Trinka" followed by the name of the song you want to hear and it will usually come up! Songtales - This is a list of all the songtales currently available from GIA publishing. When you click on a link to a book, scroll down and you will find free mp3 recordings if they are available! There is more to come for our littlest friends, so stay tuned! One of the ways we enjoy learning about music in 4K, 5K, and 1st grade is to learn fingerplays and action songs. Think "This Little Piggie." Here are a few that we're learning in class right now: Two Little Blackbirds Five Little Ladies Head and Shoulders Baby Charlie Over the Ocean See the videos below! Some of these are variations of what we do in class; see if you can spot the differences!
Thanks for stopping by the music room! We are learning so much every week in music class and Mrs. Sarris would love if families would share their music together. This month in music class for 4K and 5K students, we are learning "Chop, Chop, Chippity, Chop." The lyrics are provided below. Ask your student to show you the motions and choose some foods to "chop" as you say the poem. Chop, chop, chippity chop! Cut off the bottom and cut off the top. Whatever's left, we'll put in the pot. Chop, chop, chippity chop! Welcome to another amazing school year at Mayo Elementary! Listed below are all the grade level performance dates for the 2019-2020 school year: 1st and 4th grade: Tuesday, December 3, 2019 2nd and 5th grade: Monday, November 11, 2019 3rd grade (with Mayo Singers): Monday, April 13, 2020 Kindergarten Graduation: Tuesday, May 26, 2020 Keep an eye out for more details as these dates get closer. Congratulations to our 3rd grade students on their spring program, Carolina in the Morning! |
